I offer an approach to couples therapy that is rooted in attachment theory and draws on emotion focused therapy (EFT). EFT is an evidence based approach to practice that has proven results. It recognizes that relationship distress results from a perceived threat to basic adult needs for safety, security, and closeness in intimate relationships
This approach to couples therapy speaks to our core vulnerabilities as human beings. Does my partner have my back? Will he/she be there for me? Do I matter deeply to my partner? Am I safe in this relationship? If we fear the answers to any of these questions may be ‘no’, it can be frightening and cause us to fight or withdraw from our partner–the fight or flight response.
Couples therapy provides a safe space where both partners can share their thoughts, feelings and concerns with an unbiased other who can help unpack the core issues to uncover what’s really going on for each partner. Couples therapy helps by slowing things down allowing for a new conversation to emerge.
