Internal Family Systems Therapy: An Experiential Introduction to the Model

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is one of the most popular and effective evidence-based approaches used today. This training will provide an experiential introduction to IFS Therapy for clinicians who are curious to learn about IFS and are seeking guidance on how to begin working with clients informed by this approach.  The training will consist of didactic teaching, experiential exercises and a live demonstration of the model.

As a participant, you will be guided through personal meditation exercises to get to know parts of your own system and engage in a ‘Parts Mapping’ exercise. This will help you gain a felt sense of the approach, to better facilitate the model with your clients. You will have the opportunity to watch a demonstration session and have a chance to practice the model. There will be ample time for questions and discussion.

Through taking this workshop, you will learn the basic principles and structure of an IFS session and gain an understanding of how to approach working with your clients informed by this approach. You will learn how to name and speak for your parts and gain knowledge about the different parts of the internal system: i) the protective parts—managers and firefighters ii) exiled parts that hold wounds from the past and iii) Self-energy which is not a part; everyone has a 'Self' that can bring harmony and healing to the system.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an understanding and learn the basic principles of Internal Family Systems Therapy

  • Participate in experiential exercises to get to know parts of your own system

  • Learn the structure of an IFS session

  • Gain the tools to begin working with clients informed by this model

TESTIMONIALS

  • “I experienced Cleo as a workshop presenter. I have seen a lot of educators as a 64-year-old senior psychotherapist myself. She was the most skilled online group facilitator that I have had the privilege to learn from. Her ability to communicate clearly, expertly and compassionately was inspiring”

  • “Our children’s mental health centre and partner agencies benefited greatly from Cleo’s excellent training on brief, time-limited psychotherapy. Cleo provided our team with a structured frame for utilizing best practices in brief work, and participant feedback was excellent. Cleo has a great ability to condense relevant information and balance didactic learning with participant breakout activities. Cleo’s dedication to evidence-based practice and years of clinical experience enriched our learning!”

  • “We are so glad to have had the opportunity to provide a "When the Well is Dry" workshop with Cleo. Given the incredible strains and pressures that health and social care providers have been experiencing over the last few years, participants were grateful for the chance to take a day to focus on their own wellness and learn strategies they can incorporate moving forward. Cleo created a relaxing space that allowed attendees to feel comfortable sharing their experiences, not only with her, but also with each other, which seemed validating and empowering. It was evident that this workshop certainly helped to 'fill peoples' cups,' which was our goal. I would highly recommend Cleo and this workshop.”
